Alicia Rasley – Channeling Your Characters (Online Class Starts Aug 5)

Channeling Your Characters

In this interactive workshop, you’ll be exploring your main characters’ journeys, strengths, conflicts, and values. From these discussions and exercises, you can deepen your scenes and your plot with an emotional arc. And you’ll be able to individualize your plot events by determining where the characters start, where they end up, and how they get there through interacting with the other characters in the story events. Every exercise will apply directly to your own story, and Alicia will respond to each exercise individually with suggestions and feedback. Channel your characters, and deepen and individualize your story with insightful counsel!

Peter Andrews – Worldbuilding for Contemporary Fiction (Online Class July 1-29)

Worldbuilding for Everyone

Every story can benefit from an authentic, fully realized setting. By
asking the right questions, the writer can immerse readers in a specific environment, time period, and culture. Whether it’s a galaxy far, far away or your own backyard, a detailed setting can engage your reader and sharpen your conflict.

Make contemporary stories as exciting and surprising as SF and fantasy by moving past assumptions. Make invented worlds as real and believable as the town you live in. The class will explore settings from a variety of perspectives and apply what’s learned to storytelling.

What catches readers’ imaginations? How do you explore the environment and use what you learn to raise the stakes? What needs to be there, and what should be left out? Using the tools of fantasy and SF writers, discover how society, geography, history, and economics can make your story fresh, believable, and compelling.
